A memorial site in France dedicated to commemorate the Dominion of Newfoundland forces members who will killed during World War 1 is The Beaumont-Hamel Newfoundland Memorial. The memorial sits on a preserved 74 acre battlefield park where the Newfoundland Regiment made an unsuccessful attack on the first day of the Battle of the Somme on July 1st, 1916. After a thirty minute assault the regiment was nearly completely wiped out. The memorial is the largest area of the Somme battlefield that has been preserved. It is also the largest battalion memorial on the Western Front. The site includes preserved trench lines, cemeteries and different memorials. The land was purchased by the people of Newfoundland in 1921. TTThe Memorial site was officially opened on June 7th, 1945. The Canadian Government through the Department of Veterans Affairs, is responsible for the maintenance of the site. Prior to the 45th anniversary of the site, an original cabin was replaced and trench restoration work was completed. The site is only one of two Canadian National Historic sites located outside of Canada. The memorial site represents the Newfoundland First World War experience and it remains a symbol of sacrifice.
