This private guided tour in Brussels is one that draws many visitors every year who want to honor the thousands of fallen soldiers from one of the most significant battles of WWI, the Battle of the Somme. This interesting excursion will leave a lasting impression as we visit monuments to the heroes who so fiercely defended our freedom.
In "Poppy Country" many people visit the locations where their loved ones have their names engraved on the war memorials, leaving a poppy for remembrance on these sites. It is said that this battle was representative of the carnage and tragedy of trench warfare, with incredible casualties resulting from the conflict. Your guided tour of the Somme battle monuments will also include some time in the Somme Trench Museum 1916, and a stroll through the gorgeous public gardens next to the serpentine river Ancre.
One highlight of your private guided tour of the Battle of the Somme Monuments will be the incredible Crater Memorial. This monument commemorates the launch of the British drive against the Germans, when an explosion created a huge man-made crater. Some of the warriors who fell during the Battle of the Somme came from Wales, and others from Canada. Near the Mametz Wood lies the spectacular red Welsh Dragon monument, which was sculpted by a famous Welsh sculptor and blacksmith, David Petersen. The dragon is the feature of the Welsh flag, and the monument honors the soldiers of the 38th Division of Welsh Soldiers.
The Canadian government established the 82 acre Newfoundland Memorial Park and created the Caribou Memorial to honor the valiant Canadian soldiers of WWI. We will visit this monument on our private tour of the Somme battlefields, and also see the Thievpav Memorial to the Missing of Somme.
